The retail outlet will be the first to feel the brunt of the world going electric.
8In a future world of centralized fleets and at-home, overnight electric refueling, the role and value for these sites will stand diminished.
8Retail owners need to stay agile in order to avoid stranded assets down the road, optimizing the value of their current assets while identifying appropriate sites to acquire or retain that are fit for future refueling patterns.

It is now official. One of the world's largest research agencies has has said that increasing adoption of electric vehicles will begin to tell on oil refining, retail fuel and lubricants demand sooner than was anticipated earlier.
8What is more, oil companies are beginning to underestimate how the confluence of multiple forces outside the oil and gas industry will increase the velocity and impact of the switch to the electric from the internal combustion engine.
8Specifically, the introduction of autonomous vehicles, coupled with Mobility as a Service (MaaS), will combine with additional societal and technology trends to drive a more precipitous disruption than typically expected—one which is likely to pull electric vehicles into the market and shift the composition of the fleet much quicker than currently anticipated.
8These external forces will usher in a fundamentally new transportation paradigm and begin to disrupt downstream companies in the coming years. What currently seems like a slow-moving threat may have dramatic near-term business implications.

A recent interactive session with power ministry bureaucrats came up with the following findings:
8Auction of more PPAs for stranded projects is around the corner
8The UDAY scheme is on track to deliver ~400bps reduction in AT&C losses to 17% in FY18 since launch and 9% growth in power billed
8Older plants unlikely to be closed in a hurry. Out of 36GW of capacity older than 25 years, only 10GW of capacity would need to be discarded for inability of equipment to meet emission norms. 4.5GW of capacity has already been discarded and rest would be closed in a year.
8Positive electricity demand outlook: Power demand is growing at a CAGR of ~5% at 1,160bn units and is expected to grow at a CAGR of ~6% in FY17-FY22.
8Total power demand forecast for the year 2022/2029 is 225GW/300GW.
8Don't rule out new investment in coal. Ministry still feels a lot of new capacity will come up (get a breakdown here)
8Estimated capex for meeting emission norms is Rs5-6mn/MW. All plants have been instructed to comply and have been given individual timelines of achieving the milestone on emission norms before 2022 (Total opportunity size ~Rs1tn over five years).
8On a granular level, find out what is ahead

State utility workers are not too happy with the pace of change imposed by the current government.
8It is a lot of drama with little action on the ground is that they are saying. In other words, a lot of thunder and lightning signifying nothing.
8While the installed capacity equals 3.31 lakh MW, peak demand was only at 1.50 lakh MW, they are arguing. No real attempts are being made to fill up the yawning gap.
8The financial crisis of Discoms has reportedly become worse and consumers are being loaded with big tariff raises
8There is also serious opposition to the amendments to the Electricity Act (2014) as some of the provisions are reportedly detrimental to the interest of the consumers as utilities will be able to switch off power supply remotely.
8Clearly, there is the other side to the whole picture and the government can ignore it only at its own peril

Find out more on why US LNG has become profitable in the Asian market
8Find out the oil price lines and US LNG breakeven levels in Asia
8What kind of netbacks are available at current crude prices?
8US LNG pricing is taken at HH+15%, Tolling Fee: 2.25$, Shipping: 1.43$ (US East ->Japan, 174k cbm Me-GI or X-DF)
8Oil indexed LNG price is taken at a  slope of 14% of JCC price with a constant at 0.5$
8The point to note is that in 2017, average  JCC = 53,3$/b and Henry Hub = 3,0$/Mbtu.
8This makes US LNG to be priced at 7.1$/Mbtu and oil indexed LNG at 8.0$/Mbtu
8The projections for 2018 is positive for US LNG cargoes

We haven't seen the end of the clean energy revolution yet. The energy future is changing fast enough but the change can accelerate dramatically in the future.
8At the core of this revolution is the massive rush to develop new, high-performance, low-cost materials that are resilient, safe for humans and the environment, recyclable, and use  abundant elements so that they can be deployed globally.
8These new materials can cause the cost of energy to go down to exceeding low levels, thereby bringing about another subsequent revolution in carbon free way of making petrochemicals, fertilizers and chemicals.
8This challenge is now seen not merely as an engineering problem but in a fundamentally different way. And it involves new design principles and the way matter is organized from the atomic to the system scale.
8It is acknowledged that the new search, that will take hundreds or thousands of time more effort than was needed for the Manhattan project that lead to the discovery of the nuclear bomb, is not possible within the existing scientific paradigm where human intuition has a big role.
8If you are an oil & gas practitioner, and if you think your world or business model is safe, then you may be forced to think again sooner than later.

The use of silicon to make solar cells was the end result of 60 years of R&D
8But this traditional, human researcher-centric methods, however, are now insufficient for providing the materials innovations needed to deliver ubiquitous clean energy.
8The world has reached the limits of the human mind to assimilate the level of detail and magnitude of data that are now produced by experiments and computational simulations.
8Computer simulations with current computer power are approaching the limit to predict the properties of matter at the relevant length and time scales.
8Groups of scientists are now working hard reducing new materials development cycle from 20 years to 1 or 2 years.
8They are building on recent scientific breakthroughs and the ability to program machines to assist the design of materials, moving away from the drudgery of Edisonian discovery methods. Such breakthroughs allow scientists to order whole families of new materials based on desired properties without tedious hours of trial and experiments in the lab.
8The development of new AI-assisted theoretical methods have just begun speeding up the simulation and design and material synthesis capabilities beyond the scale of any human team.
8And the impact of these new sets of discoveries will be felt in the world of energy in lesser time than was thought earlier.
8The new approach uses artificial intelligence, machine learning, next generation computing, robotics, nano technology and inverse designing.
8The attempts are to evolve a Moore's law for research where the rate of research doubles every two years

Among the other findings of the report on coal demand are the following:
8Even though coal demand increases, no new coal mines need to be allocated or auctioned beyond the current pipeline.
8In the short term, coal production is likely to be significantly lower than the potential.
8However adverse geology can constrain the competitiveness of future coal production.
8Captive coal blocks may be underutilised due to issues of end consumer sectors
8Logistics infrastructure is likely to emerge as a key bottleneck.
8Import is likely to emerge as the key substitute for domestic coal supply if demand continues to gallop rapidly.
8The various policy formulations needed to keep coal demand going up are also elaborated.
Click on Reports for more Details
A exhaustive demand estimate made recently seems to claim that demand for coal in India, as a source of primary energy, will expand until 2030 and perhaps beyond.
8While the rate of growth of demand may taper off, it will continue to grow well into the conceivable future.
8Overall coal demand is estimated to be 900–1,000MTPA by 2020 and 1,300–1,900MTPA by 2030.
8The demand scenario is influenced by economic growth, energy efficiency and the emergence of alternate coal uses.
8One potential discontinuity that may reduce coal demand still lower is the shift of consumers en masse to off-grid systems driven by viability of solar and storage combine.
8In the current demand scenario, greater contribution from solar and other RE sources has been assumed. However, it still does not cover the possibility of consumers increasingly shifting to off-grid system driven not just by cost considerations, but also climate and sustainability considerations.
8In such a scenario, the tipping point may occur prior to cost breakeven and irrespective of the existing grid-based capacity (fixed cost being sunk, the comparison would be with variable cost alone).
8On the other hand, greater than expected growth in the manufacturing sector, overall economic growth or delayed growth of renewables and or storage may lead to higher coal demand.
8Because of uncertainty in demand, estimates need to be redrawn every three years, the progress of key technologies that may alter the energy-mix dynamics need to be assessed and technological impact on coal demand be ascertained.

KSK Mahanadi Power Company Ltd has stumbled on interest obligations on the debt availed for setting up the 3600 MW (6 X 600 MW) thermal power project (TPP) in the state of Chhattisgarh.
8This is owing to delays in implementation of the project caused by execution related challenges, agitation by locals and subsequently due to delays in securing funding for cost overruns.
8The entire project commissioning date (CoD) was revised to December 2017 from December 2015, which was earlier revised from appraised CoD of December 2013.
8However, the company is yet to commission the entire project.
8Large delays in execution, steep depreciation of rupee against the US dollar, thereby escalating the cost of imported packages, and the construction of a temporary transmission line, resulted in a cost overrun to the extent of 67% of the original appraised cost, thus adversely impacting the cost competitiveness of the project.
8The project cost is likely to increase further due to delays in achieving the revised CoD of December 2017.
8The commissioning of the remaining units of the project is dependent upon the tie-up of the balance equity funding and debt funding.
8Nevertheless it is not as if progress has not been achieved. Two units had gone into commercial operations in August 2013 and August 2014 respectively and synchronization of the third unit of the project with the grid was December 2017.
8PPAs are a problem but a full tie-up of capacity is yet to take place.

Pumped storage hydro plants are one of the most deployed grid level conventional energy storage devices which can provide active and reactive energy to cater to the flexibility requirement of the grid. These plants are considered as one of the most flexible generators.
8They render a number of flexible services such as managing demand & generation variability, imbalances & deviation in real time operation, congestion management and replacing high-cost peak energy with stored energy while also ensuring optimum utilization of water resources.
8But there are many problems in getting such systems off the ground
8Incentive will be needed to attain higher than normative availability
8Then again, higher normative auxiliary consumption will have to be allowed, since pumped storage hydro units operate for more than double the duration of conventional hydro units.

LNG prices did spurt towards the end of 2017 and the so far prices look like they are going to stay high for some more time
8But not for too long.
8After a winter of record high LNG prices, the market is bracing again for a year of structural oversupply, as the strength of China and emerging Asian markets seems insufficient to bridge the gap between growing global supplies and declining consumption among legacy Asian buyers such as Japan, Taiwan and Korea.
8Global supply capacity growth is expected to outpace demand growth in 2018, with 31.8 million mt/year of new capacity due to come online, versus a forecast global demand growth of 23.3 million mt year on year.
8For 2018, more than 50% of the new incoming supply capacity will come from Australia, with 2018 startups largely expected towards the start and end of the year.

The key to gas fulfilling its potential role as a ‘transition fuel’ up to and beyond 2030, is that it must be delivered to high-income markets below $8/MMbtu, and to low-income markets below $6/MMbtu (and ideally closer to $5/MMbtu).
8The major challenge to the future of gas will be to ensure that it does not become (and in many low-income countries remain) unaffordable or uncompetitive, long before its emissions make it unburnable.
8There are many countries including India where therI is an absolute price level, such as $5/MMbtu, above which customers can not afford to purchase the fuel either because of their income level, or because the end-user price level of the final product for which gas is being purchased would be too high.
8That fact that pipeline capacity utilization in India is low is a pointer to the inability of gas suppliers to find affording customers.
8KG Basin suppliers will have to keep these gas ceiling prices in mind while formulating their arithmetic.

The recent spurt in LNG prices is making the use of gas almost unaffordable in India not just for the power sector but for other segments of the economy as well.
8The average LNG price in December spiraled to $9.7/mmbtu, up from $ 7.4/mmbtu for the same month last year
8While there was expectation that prices will be lower on account of a number of new LNG terminals coming up globally, unusually cold conditions globally and a spurt in demand has kept gas prices high.
8The average price of LNG went up from $6.4/mmbtu in April-December, 2016-17 to $7.70/mmbtu for the same period this year.
8Clearly, these are prices which are going to eventually impact demand in the highly price sensitive Indian market where alternative fuel prices, such as naphtha or fuel or even petroleum coke prices are rising at a slower pace than imported gas.
8For now, despite higher prices,
LNG import for the month of December 2017 was 2031.0 MMSCM which was 6.8% higher than the corresponding month of the previous year. The cumulative import of 19389.0 MMSCM for the current year till December 2017 was higher by 3.4% compared with the corresponding period of the previous year.

Is coal going through a revival, albeit a temporary one?
8Latest indications are that are expecting a flood of demand from buyers in Chinese companies wanting cargoes after restocking has emerged subsequent to freezing temperatures in China. Low temperatures pushed power plant thermal coal consumption to high levels, and prices to a 14-month high.
8On the longer term too, some are seeing a revival in demand for cleaner coal even though its share in the energy mix continues to fall
8Base load power stations will continue to run on coal for a long time to come despite a spurt in renewable capacity creation

The efficiency of thermal power plants goes down at lower loads if they are to participate in balancing requirements of the grid.
8This needs to be compensated on account of high availability of  renewable energy generation as it calls for backing down of cheaper conventional sources on account of  RE's must-run status.
8Frequent start-stop of machines and frequent ramping up and down, subject the boiler and turbine to greater deterioration of equipment and higher O&M needs.
8The thermal stresses are highest in case of starting from cold condition.
8This is where gas based power plants can come in handy.
