Completely eliminating coal-fired power generation globally, it is estimated, could entail construction of over 10,000 power plants at an estimated cost of $ 3-7 trillion using natural gas-fired capacity as a replacement.
8Alternately, the cost of a theoretical wind-and-battery storage combination is about 2.5 times that range.
8The natural gas option exceeds today's market capitalization of the entire S&P Energy index by roughly fourfold, while the wind-battery option is about 10 times today's market capitalization of the S&P Energy index as a whole.
8So think carefully before you speak of the end of coal as a fuel for the future

Different kind of business models are now evolving for rooftop solar
8Currently majority of the rooftop capacity in India is based on the capex model, where the user has invested in the capital himself.
8The alternate model is the OPEX model where the developer builds a solar energy system on the customer’s property for no significant upfront charges.
8The generation from the solar energy system offsets the customer’s electric utility bill, and the developer sells the power generated to the customer at a fixed rate.
8Currently around 80% of the installed solar rooftop capacity was under the capex model.
8This model is gaining traction but there are other more innovative models which are slowly taking root

The government has plans to install 40 GW of rooftop solar power by 2022 at a cost of $ 34 billion
8That is the kind of money which is not easy to get
8Commercial lenders have limitations in long term financing they can provide.
8Banks are cautious in lending to rooftop solar projects because there are high perceived risks and limited information on the track records of rooftop solar investments. Even when banks lend to rooftop solar projects, the high-risk perception and high per unit transaction cost has led to high costs of borrowing, thereby negatively impacting IRR of the project.
8Find out more on how this limitation is being sought to be bridged and how some institutions are coming up with the money and tenor required to finance such projects.

The solar rooftop market has grown at a CAGR of 98% over the last 4 years.
8Historically, solar rooftop systems have always maintained a 10-12% share of the overall solar capacity.
8With 65% of total installed capacity, commercial & Industrial remain the biggest market segment for rooftop solar. These consumers account for more than 50% of India’s total power demand and make savings of up to 50% through rooftop solar systems as their grid tariffs are typically between Rs 7-10 / kWh.

Blockchain technology is not something India seems to be encouraging but globally energy solutions are now being onboarded to these platforms
8A new solution provider has come up with a blockchain based platform that seeks to verify and reward the production of sustainable and renewable energy through the issuance of an ERC20-compliant utility token.
8The advantage is that by capturing data directly from IOT and smart devices and through market aggregators, the platform is able to create immutable proof of production and allocate tokens via an open-source “oracle”.
8In doing so, the platform will serve as a standardized incentive for producers and allow consumers to validate their own sustainable actions.
8This revolutionary program is meant to address many of the systemic issues in global renewable markets today.

The entry of RIL-BP as a competitive supplier of gas in India can have a big impact only if the government plays along and brings about much needed reforms in this segment of the economy.
8Unless the stratified common carrier paradigm that underpins the midstream sector is unlocked, monopoly owners of the infrastructure are unlikely to allow for much progress.
8A case at point is a similar foray by Shell, which already has an LNG terminal in operation. The company is the largest global LNG player and yet in India, it remained stymied by lack of direct access to customers.
8With both BP and Shell actively involved in the Indian market, it is time for the government to breakup GAIL into its marketing and transmission arms as a first step towards reforming the sector.
8Unlike Shell, RIL-BP has a bigger exposure to market and is likely to push the government on reforms
8The PNGRB can play a bigger and more assertive role as well
8RIL thought it could break the monopolies in existence in the sector when it drew first gas in the KG basin. That attempt was unsuccesful.
8Let's see what happens this time around

Despite the massive push into renewable energy, government budgetary and extra budgetary outlay in this segment is much lower than in the thermal power segment
8The total spent in renewables is a mere Rs 14,000 crore
8In comparison, the power ministry's total spend -- including public sector capex -- is Rs 70,000 crore
8Budgetary support to the solar sector totals up to Rs 848.50 crore only, indicating big investments in the segment is self funded
8Of the Rs 14,000 crore, around Rs 10,000 crore is made up of capex by Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency

A gathering of power sector experts has expressed the view that coal based power generation is here to stay in India for a long time to come
8In this context, examples are given of how retiring old plans and putting up super critical plants can make business sense
8Retofitting is an option too but the cost benefits will have to weighted out carefully
One point of view was the decommissioning should be compulsory for units which are more than 17 yeas old and that should be accompanied by new 800 MW units.

Small solar power companies seem to be having a difficult time despite rock solid payment guarantee mechanisms
8Taking recourse to these guarantees is never an easy job particularly when the contracted power tariffs are high.
8Then again, if there are implementation delays for some reason or other, tariff rates go down, adversely impacting promoters
8Here is an example of what happened with one such developer
Click on Reports for more Details
The rush to wind energy and the subsequent uncertainty and volatility have taken some companies unawares.
8When a larger time frame is taken into account, wind energy tariffs have been rising instead of falling but external disturbances have forced generators to back down
8In Tamil Nadu, for example, there have been grid backdowns which have adversely impacted wind energy generators.
8There has been higher grid availability in recent quarters but the pain from the past is being felt all around.
8The story seems to be the same for the biomass industry. In many cases, Intermittent availability of raw materials and subsequent lower utilization level derailed the business for some operators

Even as there is an avalanche of protests over the Directorate General of Safeguards' recommendation of a 70% import duty on solar cells, India has sought to clear its name with the  Dispute Settlement Body of the WTO over a US complaint that certain domestic content requirements ("DCR measures") imposed by India on solar power developers ("SPDs") selling electricity to governmental agencies under its Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission were anti-competitive in nature.
8India has claimed that it has ensured that these measures were cleared up and there are no such measures now under imposition

8It was pointed out that such instances were to be avoided and it was the responsibility of the generator to interact with their trader to ensure equilibrium.
