A 700-megawatt solar CSP project in Dubai will use molten salt thermal energy storage to deliver electricity overnight  -- at around 70 US $ per MWh -- competing with fossil fuel power generation without subsidy, highlighting that overnight dispatchable solar power for the global energy system is possible and economic.
8Power generation technology is only part of the energy transformation story.
8Stationary storage technology is continuously improving, and costs are falling steeply.
8While pumped hydro systems currently dominate total installed power storage capacity, our analysis shows that the cost of stationary batteries such as lithium-ion and flow batteries could fall by up to 66% by 2030, in turn stimulating 17-fold growth in storage capacity.
8This momentum is representative of a new energy paradigm – a smart, responsive, low-carbon way to generate and consume energy, defined by a mix of utility-scale and decentralized, digitalized technologies. I
8Indeed, it is increasingly clear that this is no longer the energy system of the future, but the energy system of today.

After decades of dominance by lead-acid batteries, new types of battery are developing rapidly, with great potential for power storage, electric vehicles and other applications.
8While there are uncertainties around the pace of change, high energy density lithium-ion batteries have seen costs fall significantly since 2010.
8Other new technologies include metalair, flow and solid-state batteries. In metal-air batteries electricity is generated through a chemical reaction that oxidises a metal such as lithium or zinc using oxygen from the air.
8Flow batteries typically use two liquid electrolytes stored in external tanks to hold charge with energy released by pumping the charged fluids through an electrochemical cell. Because of their simple structure, it can be relatively cheap to add storage capacity to flow batteries.
8Solid-state batteries replace liquid or polymer electrolytes with a solid material such as glass.
8Their configuration allows for higher energy density than lithium-ion chemistries. Solid-state cells do not contain flammable electrolytes so also offer safety advantages.

All estimates seem to point to a robust coal market for the next 15 years
8There is a projection of global seaborne thermal trade going up and not down to 1.1 billion tonnes
8Despite the march of renewable power, around 300 GW of thermal capacity is under construction in Asia today
8In India today, our on-ground monitoring tools, manned by trained engineers, seem to suggest that there is a reasonable amount of activity still there both in brownfield and greenfield projects
8This is despite projections that there isn't any real need for more thermal capacity to come up

Technology is moving really rapidly and it is always a challenge for companies today to figure out where the future is going to be.
8The website carries here a scan of nearly 350 cutting edge research documents (they are included in this report) that predicts that hydrogen technology is slowly by inexorably gaining an advantage over battery technology in the entire mobility segment, from two wheelers, cars, trucks & buses, trains, drones and aircrafts.
8Hydrogen powered systems are emerging in other segments too, including as long lasting laptop and phone chargers.
8Small hydrogen canisters can provide a 100 km rides for two wheelers.
8The market is evolving very quickly and it seems that lower range cars will be dominated by battery technology whereas long range trucks and vehicles will be powered by hydrogen.
8Cost of hydrogen manufacturing and storage is coming down, particularly when tied up with off-peak renewable energy rates.
8Hydrogen is now becoming cost competitive as more and more companies across the world begin investing in this technology
8Indian companies with an eye on the future need to keep a close track on these developments.
The future is here and it is uncertain.

The website carries here a complete pre-feasibility report for the second offshore wind farm that is being planned to be set up in India.
8But the report claims that there are many uncertainties still in building offshore wind farms in India.
8Estimating the levelised cost of energy (LCOE) of an offshore wind farm as well as related economic metrics such as net present value (NPV) or internal rate of return (IRR) can be a challenge due to the range of technical and economic factors in play and their associated uncertainties.

A diversified international power giant, present in the thermal and renewable segments in India, has declared that finding Electricity demand continued to rise in India in 2017.
8The company opportunities in grid-connected solar projects were now "fiercely competitive", making winning projects at financially attractive terms difficult.
8When large global companies with easy access to fund projects find the going tough, the Indian renewable power market has transited into an entire different paradigm altogether.
8The sector is no longer accessible to leave alone mom-and-pop enterprises but also to larger companies
8The segment has now become a game of very large numbers, huge economies of scale, low margins and very deep pockets

Find out more on how the big battle between hydrogen and electric cars are being fought between Elon Musk (Tesla) on one hand and Takahiro Hachigo of Honda and Akio Toyoda of Toyota on the other.
8The big advantage for hydrogen cars is that can be refuelled within 5 minutes. At best, the electric cars require 9 times longer charging time from an almost empty to a full battery. A Tesla Supercharger gives about 10 km per minute.
8The surprising but unnoticed fact is that hydrogen cars already have longer range, faster refuelling (5 minutes) and lower price than the most high performance electric vehicles.
8Next year's hydrogen-powered cars are announced to get a longer range and lower price than today's
8Hydrogen refueling needs huge investments but technological advancements are making this easier than before. Mass production of electrolytic hydrogen packs in container modules is likely to bring down the cost of setting up dispensing station significantly.
8A 800 km hydrogen powered train is already working in Europe. These trains can change the entire electric auto dynamics in the rail industry. It is possible that eventually, if these trains gain momentum, India's great rail electrification infrastrucutre -- more of which is being built now -- will become redundant.
8The low weight associated with a relatively high tolerance for the hydrogen tank volume, reduced noise and reduced contaminants in water and air should make hydrogen and fuel cell-powered boats an interesting option.
8Hydrogen fuel cells provide approximately 3 times more energy / kg than batteries and it is getting to be more realistic to operate aircraft with hydrogen and fuel cells than with battery.
8Hypersonic jet planes can be powered by hydrogen.
8Other kinds of interesting options are coming up. For wind power, diurnal variation is buffered with batteries, a couple of days variation with pumped hydropower and several weeks with electrolytic hydrogen. Pilot projects are being launch with furious rapidity around the world to store spare electricity in hydrogen and to convert electricity into chemicals and petrochemicals.

8US-based Excelerate Energy is developing 3.75 million-tonne annual capacity offshore LNG terminal under an agreement signed on July 18, 2016. Excelerate will get around US$0.59 per unit (1,000 cubic feet) of natural gas as service charge and costs for tag boat operation, port facility, etc.
8Indian company Petronet also secured a deal to build another LNG import terminal at Kutubdia island having a capacity to handle around 1,000 mmcfd gas.
8Anil Ambai's Reliance too builds a LNG terminal at Kutubdia island while local  energy giant Summit will also construct a FSRU LNG Terminal at Moheshkhali island with a capacity to handle around 500 mmcfd of gas.

Concessions to solar power are now being gradually withdrawn by state governments
8The assumption now is that the price of solar power has reached grid parity and is even less than coal fueled power plants.
8The concessions granted are being subsidized by other users of the network and ultimately borne by the consumers.
8One state in particular has proposed withdrawal of incentives in phases every year by reducing them by 10% every year.
8Transmission, Wheeling and Scheduling & System Operation charges are proposed at 40% of that applicable for conventional power plants.
8And this component will keep going higher over the years
8Then again, the levy 50% of the cross subsidy surcharge for third party open access consumers will be withdrawn every year by 10%.

The benchmark rates are now sought to be fine tuned for solar power in line with falling auction tariffs. The following are the benchmark solar tariff determination parameters recently issued in a draft paper by one state
8Capital cost: Rs. 3.5 Crores/MW
8CUF: 19%
8Operation and maintenance expenses 1.4% of Capital cost with escalation at 5.72% p.a from second year
8Insurance: 0.35% of net asset value
8Debt-Equity ratio: 70:30
8Life of plant and machinery: 25 years
8Return on Equity: 17.56% (pre-tax)
8Term of Loan 10 years with 1 year moratorium period
8Interest on loan: 9.95%
8Depreciation 3.6% on 95% of Capital cost
8Working Capital components one month O&M cost and two months receivables
8Interest on working capital: 10.95%
8Discount facto{r 8.75%
8The solar power tariff is computed with reference to the determinants listed above.
8The tariff works out to Rs. 3.11 per unit without accelerated depreciation and Rs. 3.05 per unit with Accelerated Depreciation (AD).
8This then becomes the ceiling solar tariff
8In comparison, tariffs determined by other states are higher

NTPC is conducting a "handholding" exercise in as many as 18 thermal power stations in 12 states
8And this is showing results. UP claims to have reduced generation cost by as much as Rs 0.54 per unit. The state has closed down units to keep costs low
8One plant in Rajasthan was able to report benefits of a massive Rs 700 crore
Click on Reports for more Details
NTPC's argument that the best way to preserve scarce resources is to ration coal consumption against less efficient units and channelize them to more efficient units seems to be gaining traction
8But since most of the efficient units are in the state sector, it is difficult for the central government to conduct a rationing exercise
8The best way is to coax state to shut down inefficient units.

After UDAY, additional debt taken by discoms totaled up to a staggering Rs 1.09 lakh crore
8But the problems is that 74,000 crore is for non-capex funding. This is as much as 25% of the annual revenues of discoms.
8Even those directly involved with UDAY are not aware about how much of this money is to fund losses of discoms and how much is for working capital
8The loss funding is a necessary exercise until discoms become cash positive and the only way to raise money is through state issued or UDAY guaranteed loans
8The power ministry however is still coming to grips with how to handle loss funding by discoms under UDAY
Click on Reports for more Details
The UDAY scheme is half way through and it is beginning to face headwinds.
8As many as 200 divisions across eight states have at least 25% of India's AT&C losses.
8Some divisions show as much as 70% loss. Focusing on them can cut consumption dramatically and save more than Rs 10,000 crore
8What is worse is that losses in states where AT&C is more than 20% are going up instead of coming down.
