Hybrid geotechnical scope for NTPC project creates contractor engagement challenge
8The consultancy tender adopts a hybrid execution model blending on-site and off-site work potentially requiring bidders to mobilize specialized teams across locations. This design may filter out smaller players lacking dual capacity.
8Unlike conventional man-month consultancy, NTPC has structured this tender around deliverables linked to milestones. This shifts the risk onto consultants for timely outputs, while aligning NTPC’s cost exposure strictly to completed work.
8The extensive geotechnical scope suggests NTPC is preparing for a significant power sector asset possibly greenfield thermal, renewable, or transmission-related. Foundation data from this consultancy will feed into design and construction planning.

93 crore package includes drone-based health reports of Rajasthan grid towers
8For the first time in this utility’s GIS tenders, drone surveys coupled with AI/ML processing are being bundled to deliver asset health reports for transmission towers and transformers, covering thousands of kilometers across Rajasthan.
8Starting with an end date of June 30, the tender has seen three deadline extensions, now closing on July 28. The scope complexity spanning drones, AI, GIS software, and hardware delivery is likely driving bidder caution. Details

Strong industry response: Over 80 bids for RESCO solar project under central subsidy scheme

8A 25-year solar power supply project under Component-A of a flagship government scheme has attracted significant participation, adding to the growing momentum of solar projects in India. Bidder profiles indicate interest from smaller players alongside known RESCO operators, reflecting the increasing viability of long-term grid tie-ups under decentralised solar models.

8The latest tender focuses on solar projects in India involving plants up to 2 MW capacity, to be located near 33/11 kV substations. Developers are required to supply power while also managing land acquisition, grid connectivity, and operations over 25 years under strict performance obligations. This structure is becoming a standard template for distributed solar projects in India.

8Even though individual plant size is capped at 2 MW, over 80 players have entered the technical race, highlighting a robust contractor ecosystem evolving for small-scale solar projects in India. However, the long-term viability will hinge more on land and infrastructure execution risks than on PPA assurance, a recurring theme in distributed solar projects in India.

Large package awarded under 2x800 MW expansion: key public sector player outbids global rival
8In a critical balance-of-plant package for a major central Indian super thermal power project, a domestic PSU emerged as the L1 bidder for a transformer package valued at nearly Rs. 495 crore, significantly undercutting a global player in transmission technology.
8In a tender where only two technically qualified bidders participated, the PSU bagged the contract owing to a lower bid by 7.3%, reaffirming its strategic intent to hold market share in the ultra high-voltage transformer segment.
8The public sector engineering major clinched the award for high-capacity transformer supply at Rs. 495.15 crore, edging out Hitachi Energy India by a margin of over Rs.39 crore. The win further reinforces BHEL’s standing in NTPC’s critical power equipment supply chain. Details
Major consultancy bid extended for operational review of large thermal power project
8The owner of a major 2 × 300 MW and 2 × 500 MW thermal station has extended its consultancy bid timeline to 18th July. The project involves a complex evaluation of both sub-critical and supercritical units at a key state-run power station.
8With a new 660 MW supercritical unit being integrated, the state generation utility has invited consultancy services to verify the operational readiness of its entire thermal complex, extending bid deadlines to attract wider participation.
8The project involves reviewing a mix of 300 MW, 500 MW, and upcoming 660 MW units at a key state-owned thermal facility. The layered capacity setup demands comprehensive technical validation across generations of plant technology.

Major ash handling EPC tender for 2x800 MW thermal units sees fresh bid extension
8NTPC has extended the submission deadline for its ash handling system tender linked to a 2x800 MW supercritical expansion in central India. The new date pushes the bidding window till August, hinting at bid preparation complexities and scope negotiations.
8In line with new environmental mandates, the tender requires bidders to design the ash handling system to be fully ZLD compliant. This adds an extra layer of civil and hydraulic complexity for the 2x800 MW expansion.
8After three rounds of amendments and clarifications, the bid submission date for the 2x800 MW ash handling EPC has been pushed to 7th August. This reflects bidder requests for more time to realign technical proposals. Details
Bid deadline for large ash evacuation contract pushed to end-July
8The tender for a bundled ash handling system, covering both dry and wet ash management at a major eastern India thermal site, now invites bids till 29th July.
8NTPC has revised the submission date for its comprehensive ash handling package at a 2400 MW plant, reflecting bidder demand for more preparation time.
8With the bid submission date for the ash management system at a major thermal station extended, vendors are expected to recalibrate proposals over the next two weeks.

Aluminium wound 40 kVA transformer tender sees repeated deadline extensions amid vendor pushback
8Vendors bidding for aluminium wound 40 kVA distribution transformers with CSP features in Rajasthan have faced a series of bid deadline extensions, now pushed to 31st July 2025. This prolonged timeline reflects ongoing issues in Transformer Supply Contracts in India, either due to bid preparation complexities or suppliers strategically waiting, especially under variable price clauses.
8The tender focuses on 11/0.433kV, 40kVA aluminium wound transformers, with Transformer Supply Contracts in India requiring mandatory LT bushing boxes designed as per Annexure-A specifications. This standardization in Transformer Supply Contracts in India is expected to directly impact bidder manufacturing processes and also alter field installation practices across Rajasthan’s distribution network.
8Repeated extensions in Transformer Supply Contracts in India tenders highlight how aluminium wound designs, CSP features, and component standardization are reshaping procurement strategies in state utilities. The current developments in Transformer Supply Contracts in India signal the market’s cautious approach to adapting to these changes under RDSS and other distribution reforms.

Coal still leads but renewables show sharp regional divergence
8Despite national focus on renewables, the June 2025 data reveals that coal remains dominant in most regions. However, the renewable capacity in the Western and Southern regions has crossed significant thresholds, driven largely by private sector investments in solar and wind projects.
Private sector drives renewable growth while state utilities stay thermal-heavy
8The private sector now holds the largest share in renewable energy capacity, particularly in solar and wind. State utilities continue to focus predominantly on coal and hydro, with limited participation in new renewable projects, especially in the Eastern and North-Eastern regions.
Large hydro and pumped storage additions reshape capacity mix in June
8New hydro and pumped storage projects have notably boosted capacity in June 2025. Key additions include Greenko's Pinnapuram (5 × 240 MW) and THDC’s Tehri PSP (250 MW), indicating a trend toward flexible generation capacity for grid balancing.
Nuclear growth remains slow despite new reactor commissioning
8While NPCIL’s RAPS Unit-7 (700 MW) was commissioned in April 2025, nuclear capacity expansion remains modest. Nuclear energy continues to account for a small fraction of India’s total installed capacity, limiting its role in the clean energy transition mix.

Tender includes built-in transformer loss compensation and CT/VT error correction
8Unlike earlier automation projects, this bid mandates on-site programmable compensation for CT and VT errors, plus transformer loss adjustments. This feature typically appears in larger national grid tenders.
8A major Sikkim government-owned utility has launched an 18-month turnkey tender for implementing a real-time automation system across its transmission network. The package includes SAS, ABT metering, and complete loss auditing at the state load despatch centre.
8With the tender blending SAS, metering, and energy management systems into one package, developers are expected to raise queries about interfacing protocols and interoperability during the upcoming pre-bid session.

Aluminium wound transformer supply tender sees multiple deadline extensions
8A large north Indian discom has repeatedly extended the bid date for a 40 KVA, 11/0.433 KV CSP transformer package. The tender, originally floated in mid-2024, is now open till 15th July 2025, reflecting either bidder hesitation or strategic widening of participation.
8The transformer design mandates aluminium windings and star-1 efficiency, indicating a cost-versus-efficiency balancing act by the Rajasthan discom. Vendors will need to factor in both upfront pricing and long-term performance guarantees.
8The tender focuses on 40 KVA Completely Self Protected (CSP) transformers, aiming to reduce manual intervention during LT faults. This reflects a broader utility push towards safer rural and semi-urban electrification networks. Details
Swiss challenge hydro tenders reopen competition for 2 MW sites in Jammu and Kashmir
8Two 2 MW hydroelectric projects under independent producer mode have been launched in J&K, offering opportunities for both originators and challengers. The tenders will test market appetite for small hydro under the Swiss Challenge route, where upfront premiums drive project allocations.
8The Swiss Challenge mechanism gives the original project proposer seven days to match the best bid. If the originator matches the highest upfront premium, they retain development rights—a model designed to balance innovation and competition.

Green hydrogen project shifts to full-scope model with feedstock and O&M bundled
8A 1 TPD green hydrogen project using plasma gasification is now being offered under a turnkey contract that combines EPC, feedstock supply, and two years of O&M. The tender shifts execution risk onto the contractor, marking a change from past NTPC hydrogen initiatives.
8The 1 TPD project at the PSU’s research center places the entire responsibility for obtaining Consent to Establish and Consent to Operate on the contractor. Earlier tenders retained some of these regulatory steps with the owner.
8The 1 TPD green hydrogen project at a central PSU’s research facility mandates SIL-2 safety certification for all plant instrumentation and controls. This represents a tighter safety framework compared to previous hydrogen or waste-to-energy tenders.
8The tender design permits membrane separation, PSA, VPSA, or hybrid solutions for the hydrogen extraction system. This flexible technology window could drive varied bids from separation technology vendors.

Coal stock situation stable overall, but regional imbalances surface
8Despite an average of 24 days' coal stock across India's thermal fleet, specific regions like Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra report plants with barely 1–3 days of inventory. The mismatch points to localized logistics issues rather than a nationwide shortage.
Multiple plants run low but stay out of critical list due to low generation
8Several plants, including major private sector units, are operating with stocks lower than standard norms but have avoided critical tagging due to lower actual generation. The current methodology exempts low-dispatch stations from red-flag status.
Imported coal dependence surges in western and southern India plants
8Western and southern plants show higher use of imported coal, with several stations like Gandhinagar TPS and Painampuram TPP maintaining significant imported stocks. This trend reflects both logistical preferences and domestic supply constraints.
Large capacity stations maintain healthy stocks even with high consumption
8Mega plants such as Vindhyachal STPS and Sipat STPS report high daily coal requirements but still maintain over 10–14 days of stock. This indicates efficient supply chain management for India's largest baseload generators.

Green day-ahead market hits volume ceiling despite solar sell-side surge
8The GDAM for 14 July 2025 saw solar sell bids crossing 1200 MW in multiple blocks, yet solar MCV was consistently capped around 121–127 MW. This reflects significant buyer-side constraints and points to systemic underutilization of renewable capacity.
High price hydro segments in HPDAM remain unscheduled despite oversupply
8The hydro-only HPDAM on 14 July 2025 reported continuous zero offtake, with over 5300 MW of sell bids in peak morning blocks and no matching purchase bids. This indicates that despite availability, hydro flexibility is not being leveraged in the price discovery process.
Real-time market sees steep late-morning price correction as demand collapses
8The IEX RTM on 14 July 2025 witnessed MCPs fall sharply from over Rs. 3000/MWh in early hours to as low as Rs. 699/MWh by 10:30–10:45. This reflects real-time demand volatility, potentially linked to flexible load or weather-driven shifts.
Evening DAM prices spike to Rs. 10,000/MWh in hr market as sell-side dries up
8In the hrDAM for 14 July 2025, market clearing prices touched Rs. 10,000/MWh in evening slots (hours 20–24) as supply-side bids collapsed while demand stayed high. This highlights the classic evening peak stress on the grid, with tight supply-demand balance triggering ceiling prices.
Solar-non-solar split in GDAM shows demand saturation in non-solar slots
8Despite large solar bids in the GDAM, most of the final scheduled volume was non-solar, suggesting that developers are still facing challenges in finding buyers for solar-heavy blocks. Peak solar availability hours coincided with low MCPs and constrained offtake.
July 15 DAM shows easing price trend compared to July 14 congestion peaks
8The IEX DAM on July 15, 2025, reflected a softer price profile compared to July 14, with MCPs falling below Rs. 2700/MWh in several blocks despite higher sell-side liquidity. This points to easing supply constraints, possibly from better generation scheduling.

Central sector clocks 1,320 MW thermal capacity in Q1, but major projects slip timelines again
8Despite commissioning two 660 MW units in Bihar and Jharkhand, several central sector projects slipped from their original FY25 targets to FY26, highlighting persistent execution bottlenecks. Major deferrals include Ghatampur, Buxar, and Patratu expansions.
State utilities face cost escalation as ultra-supercritical capacities ramp up
8States added 660 MW of ultra-supercritical capacity in Q1 with UPRVUNL’s Obra-C Unit 2, but multiple projects reported revised costs, indicating financial pressures. Tamil Nadu’s North Chennai and Telangana’s Yadadri plants saw cost escalations exceeding Rs 1,000 crore over earlier estimates.
Private sector pipeline stalls as no new projects reach commissioning in Q1
8While central and state sectors commissioned units in Q1, the private sector recorded zero capacity addition. This marks a continuation of the private sector’s slowdown, with just 4,800 MW under construction compared to over 18,000 MW in the central sector.
Capacity addition targets for FY26 under strain as 2025 slippages pile up
8CEA data shows a recurring pattern of slippages from FY24 to FY25 now rolling over into FY26. Of the 15,360 MW thermal target for FY25, only 4,530 MW was achieved, raising questions about the sector’s ability to meet decarbonization-balanced growth trajectories.

Hybrid design: multi-circuit towers and monopoles converge in latest 132kV Rewari EPC bid
8Unlike standard 132kV builds, this project mandates the use of both lattice-type multi-circuit towers and tubular monopoles. The monopole adoption is likely driven by right-of-way constraints in industrial areas, marking a design shift from previous HVPNL line packages.
8In recent HVPNL packages, normal 132kV multi-circuit tower designs are restricted to a base width of 6 meters. This points to industrial corridor constraints and could impact both design complexity and construction methodology. Details
