Looks like the much talked about supply glut in the LNG industry, that was meant to kick in in 2018, is not really to be seen anywhere around.
8Every cargo seems to be finding a market.
8Winter demand is expected to be robust enough, despite higher supplier of gas through transnational pipelines to China, to keep prices high.
8There is perhaps a slight period of uncertainty between the winter of 2018 and the summer of 2021, when new capacities come on stream, but the market will tighten considerably from 2021 onwards, just when new gas from India's KG Basin begins to come in.
8High LNG prices is bad news for India, as it is a highly price sensitive market. Affordability in India is in the range of $5-7/mmbtu and not in the $9-11/mmbtu range.
8As prices stay high, gas marketing is where the challenge is going to be, both for domestic gas marketed by KG Basin suppliers and new LNG terminals which are coming up

Do not rule out nuclear power yet from the new low-cost energy paradigm.
8A new breed of small (less than 300 MW) modular nuclear plants are being readied in global laboratories, where the power plant is centrally built and shipped for installation anywhere in the world.
8The levelized cost of electricity from these plants are competitive to cost of renewable or gas-based power.
8What is more, these nuclear plants can be used for centralized cooling and thermal desalination plants
8The residual heat is usable for a variety of industrial applications, including the production of glass, plastics, steel, synthetic fuels, and chemicals.

India will find a substantial low-carbon energy and energy efficiency investment gap going ahead.
8The gap looks small now but it widens rapidly to unmanageable levels. The gap between what is needed and what is put on the ground could go up to as high as 81% for India.
8India's NDC pledge is a move in the right direction, but as his shown in this set of calculations, they are wholly insufficient for incentivizing the kind of deeper, structural changes in the energy investment portfolio required for reaching the low-temperature targets of the Paris Agreement.

The electricity generation outlook for 2018-19 is expected to be in the range of 6-7%.
8Rural electrification led by “Power for All” is expected to drive demand for electricity.
8But if demand surges on account of high industrial demand, there should be shortages too as domestic availability of coal will come up as a big constraint.
8This in turn would lead to some plants switching to imported coal.
8With imported coal trading upward of $115-120 since May 2018, it would impact margins of electricity generation companies.

Clearly, the government seems unable to cut AT&C losses.
8AT&C losses have widened instead of narrowing.
8Deterioration in AT&C losses highlights slippage in the implementation of the UDAY scheme.
8Another indicator is the status of completion of smart metering of lines, which stood at 3.82 lakh, less than 1.5% of the total target to be implemented.
8Smart metering was expected to improve collection efficiency by minimizing human intervention as well as help consumers optimize the use of electricity during peak demand hours.

The fact that 3.9GW of auctioned solar capacity was cancelled during the year is sending out the wrong signals to the market.
8SECI cancelled 2.4GW out of a total of 3GW Interstate Transmission System (ISTS) connected solar auction held in July 2018.
8Then again, Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency cancelled 1GW of grid-connected project in the same month.
8Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd cancelled 500 MW of grid-connected solar capacity.
8Agencies stated high tariff and wide gap between winning bids for cancellation of auctions.

Gas based power plants are expecting a fillip for an increasing need for peaking power now that injection of renewable power into the grid is going up
8Coal-based power plants will never be able to compete in ramp-up speed with gas-based power plants
8But new technology is coming in that will make coal-based power plants more amenable to flexible generation.
8Another point to note is that coal-based power plant technology is making some rapid progress.
8The technology is moving beyond super critical from ultra super critical to advanced ultra super critical. From here on, the movement is towards Integrated Coal Gasification Combined Cycle and eventually to Integrated Coal Gasification Fuel Cell Combined Cycle. Some pilot plants are in the offing already.
8At this rapid rate of technological development coal based power plants are unlikely to be phased out soon

A new report released in August 2018 by a prestigious science academy has claimed that earth may soon be warming up to a point where it may go beyond the point of no return.

8The report examines the evidence that such a threshold might exist and where it might be.
8If the threshold is crossed, the resulting trajectory would likely cause serious disruptions to ecosystems, society, and economies.
8Collective human action has been suggested to steer the earth away from a potential disastrous situation.
8Such action entails stewardship of the entire Earth System — biosphere, climate, and societies — and could include decarbonisation of the global economy, enhancement of biosphere  carbon sinks, behavioural changes, technological innovations, new governance arrangements, and transformed social values.

Stakeholders are divided over what kind of incentives are to be given to generators to install FGDs
A set of initiatives were deliberated and they were:
8Priority in scheduling to the TPPs which are environmentally compliant irrespective of their variable cost.
8Increased variable cost due to installation of FGD and other pollution control equipment may be subtracted from the tariff for Merit Order Dispatch for those plants installing pollution control equipment.
8EPO (Environment Power Obligation) may be introduced in line with RPO (Renewable Power Obligation) and should be made mandatory for DISCOM to purchase at least
10% power from plants which are norms compliant
8Excise & Custom duty/GST may be exempted for pollution control equipment like FGD etc.
8Present limit of 30% equity to be met by plants to be relaxed to 10%
8NCEF collected through coal cess may be utilized for funding  utilities for installation of pollution control equipment.
8The amount of coal cess may be reduced for TPPs complying with new environmental norms.

Fresh data has been brought into play to project different sources of power in India's energy matrix in 2020, 2030, 2040 and 2050.
8The interesting point to note is that gas-based power contributes the biggest share to energy generation, more than solar and wind.
8From today's perspective, when most gas-based power plants do not do well under the Merit Order Dispatch system, that fact that gas-based units will play such an important role in the future seems a little incongruous.
8How are these projections worked out?

Neither projections of slow demand or stressed assets or units being forced to work at their technical minimum seem to be deterring promoters from seeking permissions to set up newer conventional power plants
8A host of hydel plants are also lined up for permissions
8Since the sector was unlicensed, there has been a surfeit of new projects promoted by private entrepreneurs coming up, perhaps without keeping the demand dynamics in mind
8And promoters continue to rush in even today to set up newer plants

Best level cost estimates are now available for production of hydrogen for use in power generation and automotive vehicles
8While there is a lot of talk about using renewable energy to produce hydrogen through electrolysis, at present the economics of converting fossil fuel such as gas to carbon-free hydrogen by using the carbon capture route seems to be more attractive
8Prices will have to fall much more for hydrogen to become a competitive fuel of choice
8All projections show hydrogen usage becoming a big component of the total energy paradigm by 2050
