In an interesting insight, it is claimed that both solar and wind energy are reaching their physical limits when it comes to extracting more efficiencies either from a solar cell or a windmill.
8That the laws of diminishing returns are going to set in soon, when efficiency increases will slow down.
8On the other hand, particularly for shale gas, there is still a large efficiency gap to bridge. The underlying geophysics points to a roughly 500% gap between what today’s shale tech can
extract and what nature ultimately permits.
8The physics of using silicon to convert photons into electrons ends at about a 33% conversion (called the Shockley-Queisser Limit.). The most recent announcements of high-efficiency silicon cells with 26% efficiency are approaching the limit. Again, more efficiency is possible, but there are no 10-fold gains left. Then again, The physics limit for a wind turbine, called the Betz Limit, permits capturing about 60% of the kinetic energy in moving air. (Physics dictates that one can never capture 100% of any potential energy.) Modern turbines already exceed 40% capture. That leaves gains to be made, but nothing revolutionary.
8At today’s costs, $1 million invested in a modern wind turbine will produce, over 30 years of operation, about 50 million kWh. And $1 million spent on utility-grade solar panels will produce about 25 million kWh over 30 years.
8Meanwhile, $1 million spent on a shale rig in the US will produce enough natural gas to generate 400 million kWh over the same 30 years.

The problem with the Indian gas lobby is that it has failed to impress policy makers
8The conversations or presentations are airy but lack substance
8There is a is a distinct lack of convincing work on price elasticity of gas demand from gas analysts, whether from academia, consultancy, or industry.
8So it is difficult to say beyond a cursory look at empirical evidence to arrive at a figure of $5-6/mmbtu as the affordable price of gas in India, at which significantly higher volumes of gas can be pushed into the market.
8For now a combination of poorly targeted price reform, relatively low affordability, infrastructure constraints, and competing renewables targets makes it difficult to be optimistic about short to medium-term gas market potential in India, particularly if it needs to be driven by LNG imports.
Click on Reports for more Details
Why is it that China can afford much higher prices for LNG than India?
8At import prices significantly above $5 per million British thermal units (mmbtu), Indian LNG will continue to disappoint
8In comparison, Chinese affordability levels are much higher.
8The problem however is with how the Indian market is structured
8In the power sector, which has the largest potential to absorb incremental LNG supplies, India’s record low solar tariffs (e.g. a 2017 auction yielded $0.038/kilowatt-hour) exclude the costs of intermittency, raising questions over whether developers have adequately priced in risk and whether these projects will be completed on schedule. This opens up a potential balancing or bridging role for gas in the power sector, which will only become clearer as renewable project deadlines begin to kick in.
8And for India to raise its import volumes significantly, the roadmap is clear but no one seems to be willing to take the bull by its horns

Some grand projections on renewable energy infusion are being bandied around
8One is that India’s target to achieve 40% renewable energy mix in the total installed capacity by 2030 will be achieved eight years early.

India is in short supply when it comes to metallurgical coal,
8Coking coal imports were at a massive 41 million tonnes in 2016-17
8A study has now found that a considerable quantity of high ash (>35%) Low Volatile Medium Coking (LVMC) coal, which does not fall under the classified coking coal category and used as power coal, exhibits improvement in coking properties on washing and may therefore be utilized in steel making through blast furnace route.
8Washability studies have also proved that washed LVMC Coal have coking propensity and can be blended for steel making in metallurgical industry.

A global oil major has now projected that electric cars are unlikely to take a more than a small chunk of the total market even by the year 2040
8Internal combustion engine will continue to have more than 80% market share
8The another important point that is being made is that a global ban on electric vehicles will not cause the demand for oil to slow down
8In fact the new assessment is that peak oil has timeline shifted by about 10 years to 2035
8All of this however bad news for carbon emissions: in the way the transition to low carbon is structured today, carbon emissions will continue to grow until 2025 until faster transitions are worked out.

The battery operated electric car industry will take a much longer time to become mainstream in India
8Despite the hype and the government's intention to have 30% of new vehicles, the movement on the ground does not seem to indicate that this target will be achieved.
8The big bottleneck is going to be the shortage of raw materials.
8Many of the resources like copper, lithium, permanent magnets and related materials and components, are
heavily imported by India and the cost of import has been increasing over the years.
8A new kind of import dependency will set in, just as it the case with crude oil.

If offshore wind energy takes off in India, it will provide a big impetus to the crisis-ridden offshore marine spread industry.

India's maiden effort to attract investments in offshore energy has solicited an enthusiastic global response.
8The cost of offshore is falling rapidly. The cost in offshore wind projects to be commissioned between 2020 to 2022 will range from $0.06/mmbtu to $0.10/Kwh, a sharp decline compared to $0.14/kwh in 2017
8Advances in offshore wind turbine technology, wind farm development, and operations and maintenance are helping to drive down the cost of electricity from offshore wind.
8Find out how innovative changes are going to drive down costs even further
8All of this is going to make offshore wind power a particularly attractive proposition, even for a country like India, given its ability to scale up.
8The decreasing cost of electricity for new offshore wind projects means that new projects can often now compete directly with fossil fuel-fired electricity without financial support.

Latest indications are that LNG prices are going to be red hot this winter.

8Expect a $1.5/mmbtu step up, the prediction goes

8This is over and above already high prevailing prices
 Click on Reports for more
Details
India's LNG in imports have gone up by 9% in August

8But the price paid for it has gone up 80% for the month.

8Clearly, high prevailing LNG prices and the devaluation of the rupee have come as a double whammy

8Then again, projections are that the price of LNG is going spurt up by another $1.5/mmbtu

8In a price sensitive market such as India, what such prices will eventually do is stymie growth

8At these high prices, with the Rupee slated to depreciate further, it looks unlikely that offtake projections for 2018-19 will be fulfilled

India received the 6th highest number of LNG cargoes from the US ever since it started exporting LNG
8But the volume contracted is far smaller than countries higher up in the ladder, such as Japan and China
8The volumes should ideally go up as there is a reasonable arbitration advantage
8Get the volume and price points for each individual US cargo out of the US into the India here

The fact that a significant portion of coal-fired power plants are stranded assets is now a foregone conclusion
8But the government is fighting tooth and nail to ensure that they are not stranded. It has been found that a number of government interventions – in the form of public finance, subsidies and policy postponements are encouraging new capital investment in coal-fired power, which might otherwise be considered uneconomic, during the project appraisal, preparation and construction stage.
8Is this attempt good or bad policy?
8Clearly, attempts to keep such stranded capacity alive has its pros and cons

No study has been done in India yet on the links between government interventions and the drivers of asset stranding in the coal power sector.
8Further research is required on India’s coal power sector given the rapid pace of electrification, the electricity transition, and risks of high carbon lock-in.
8This could include modelling the removal of current interventions in the power sector (as has been undertaken in China) and of the interactions between different interventions – subsidies, public finance, and policy and regulatory interventions – and exploring some of the wider drivers of asset standing.
8Such work will support policy-makers to design and implement interventions – including fiscal reforms – that are needed  for all round development of the energy sector
