We have built a unique first-of-its-kind database of power sector contacts in the country. 8Unlike a regular directory, very contact in our project monitoring software comes with a rich tapestry of information on the industrial facility and the unit in which the contact is present, along with attendant business development prospect, if any, around the contact. Every contact information is validated by our team of in-house analysts -- who are all mechanical engineers rigorously trained to look for little details -- on a regular three-monthly basis. Around a contact within an industrial facility we give you a whole lot of additional information including: -- Technology parameters -- Design and actual Input-Output data for every raw material and product -- Multi-parameter utility matrix -- Long term maintenance contracts -- Feedstock data -- NIC codes 8A facility is further split up into its individual units and for each unit we have a similar set of parameters as in the facility 8And for each unit or facility, we have a resultant business development prospect, either in terms of maintenance prospect or a capital project, be an additional expansion or debottlenecking or a revamp or a new capital project 8The point to note is that we are always looking ahead and never behind, giving you exclusive information not on a tender that is already out but on a genuine future prospect, which may be a month, six months, a year or two years away from being tendered out. 8Having worked in the business for more than two decades, we know what you are looking for. 8India has so far had a poor business prospect database because the existing databases do not fulfill the requirements of a business development manager. What we have done is just plugged that gap 8For you, a deal can just be a phone call away Contact us or fill up the registration form for a demo of what we have to offerDetails

Where is India headed now in the electric vehicle revolution? 8Latest data indicate that the annual total cost (ATC) of ownership of a commercial three-wheeler is already lower than a conventional unit and post BS-VI, the differential will widen to 25%. What is more the purchase cost too is expected to be lower. A mild push by the government can bring about a wholesale transformation of the market 8The ATC of a two wheeler is currently 6% higher than its petrol counterpart but post BS-VI, this cost will be 13% lower, according to latest estimates. The purchase cost will equal out too 8As for commercial passenger vehicles, current ATC is 18% higher but post BS-VI, the cost will come down by 4%. The purchase cost of a diesel vehicle will be higher than an EV while petrol cars will be cheaper. 8As for privately owned vehicles, the ATC differential will come down from 40% now to 10% post BS-VI. 8A component-wise cost structure comparison of a conventional and a battery car is given here, showing where the differentials arise Click on Reports for more

Coal India (COAL) has introduced evacuation facility charges of INR50/t on all coal dispatches, except those through rapid loading arrangement. This is estimated to apply to about 80% of COAL’s supplies. The charges are effective immediately (from 20th December 2017). 8COAL’s dispatches grew 5% YoY (to 50.7mt) in November, even as coal-based power generation was flat YoY. 8Coal inventories at power plants remain low at just 9 days of consumption or 12mt. Restocking to normative 20-25 days of consumption will aid dispatch growth, even if power generation were to remain weak due to seasonal weather conditions. 8Then again, the premium over the notified price in e-auctions increased further to about 76%, while volumes increased to around 9mt in October. The premium and volumes both are higher than the past few months, driven by import substitution as prices in the global market have been trending up. 8So looks like good times are ahead for COAL Click on Reports for more

SECI intends to invite Expression of Interest from Indian manufacturers to set up integrated solar manufacturing facilities over a 3-year period. Around 20,000 MW of power is sought to generated through this route 8But will it eventually work to make Indian manufacturing competitive? 8Manufacturers will be invited to set up integrated solar PV manufacturing facilities on greenfield basis or, in JV with existing manufacturers so that at least 60% of the solar PV requirements for 77 GW of come from local manufacturing facilities. 8Is that too ambitious a target? 8The immediate objective is to draw up PPAs for 20 GW of solar PV capacities to be allocated on open tender basis to companies willing to set up integrated manufacturing facilities for solar PV modules in India 8And this manufacturing repertoire will include solar modules, cells, wafers, ingots and polysilicon as the case may Comment:Promoting domestic manufacturing is a commendable objective but will protecting it or insulating it create the competitive dynamics for Indian manufacturers? That remains a moot point. For competitive spirits are unleashed only when producers face the vagaries of the market. The world needs to continue working to protect the climate-- this is generally undisputed. However, there is no agreement on which technologies should be used to decarbonize the energy sector. 8Many international scenarios still assume a relevant role for nuclear power in the future. 8However, a study shows that the Paris climate protection target -- limiting global warming to below two degrees -- can be achieved inexpensively without nuclear power. 8The results of a global energy system model indicate that no new nuclear power plants have to be built in order to meet the global climate target. 8It would be cheaper to use a combination of renewable energy and energy storage systems instead. 8If this eventually turns out to be a fact, an entire industry and the ancillaries that it spawned will die a dramatic death. Bangladesh is not in a position to pay of electricity as is evident from massive losses run up by state utilities. 8Losses of the Bangladesh Power Development Board has been mounting over time 8The electricity deficit has widened 8Load shedding is 12 per cent of the total installed generation capacity and rental power or captive power is very expensive. 8In this context, those setting up LNG units for power plants must first answer the question as to whether the sector has the ability to pay up 8There is little point setting up a terminal and then shutting it down on account of counterparty payments Click on Reports to know more

It looks like India is not the only exception when it comes to state utilities running up huge losses. 8There are many examples of that around the world. 8And a transition to a loss-free or a subsidy-free regime is extremely difficult 8India is trying to bridge the gap but it is never an easy task as examples all over the world seem to show 8And not just that, a global study has claimed that the entire subject of how to cut losses for state utilities is under-researched. 8There is no optimal model to follow. So the Indian model may not necessarily be the right one, and eventually everything can well go back to square one. The study candidly admits that not enough is known on these questions: -- What are some of the institutional, political, and technical mechanisms that have proven effective in de=politicizing the tariff revisions? -- What are the pros and cons of various automatic tariff adjustment mechanisms, for instance, those where fuel costs are passed through to consumers or those linked to inflation? 8Then again, renewable energy has come and upset the applecart again, 8There is very scanty research on the impact of new renewable and distributed energy on electricity pricing in developing countries such as India. An RFQ for a MW scale battery project is coming up in one state 8Sources said that the battery plant will be set up on a pilot scale 8The idea is to prevent curtailment on account of congestion/DSM Charges resulting from intermittency of wind power 8If the idea works, big battery storage units will installed on a wider basis and India will likely become one of the world's largest markets for grid-level battery power. 8In that sense, this is a really big test for battery power Click on Reports for moreDetails
Finally the truth has been settled through an exhaustive fact gathering exercise. 8Renewable power is going to be cheaper even after taking into account all costs related to intermittency of supply. 8The costs take into account the the cost of keeping standby capacity when wind and solar power goes down, the the higher cost of flexible generation to ramp up and down, the impact on the States Deviation Settlement Mechanism (DSM) charges for inter-state flow of power, the adverse impact on coal-based generation in terms of reduction of efficiency and operation at lower Plant Load Factor and, finally, higher transmission charges on account of lower capacity utilization factor of wind and solar power. 8There have been various figures floating around so far on the financial implications of these parameters. 8But the issue has now been settled Get all the detailed data here. There is no doubt that renewable energy must be used in cities, but identifying the resources and technologies that can be used to promote what is called "circular urban metabolism" have not made great progress. 8A review of the literature establishes that there are eleven renewable technologies with different degrees of maturity that could reduce the import of energy resources, which would contribute to changing the metabolic linear model into a circular model. 8However, the applicability of the different possibilities is conditional upon the availability of resources, costs, policies and community acceptance. 8Click on Reports to figure out what will work where for India's urban conglomerations through an exhaustive modeling tool that takes into account data from all over the world. 8If you are an Indian utility, you need to take note Click on Report for moreDetails
OPG Power Generation Private Ltd's business model of a bunch of thermal power stations is under strain. 8Power is supplied through the group captive model as well as to the grid. 8The company has been garnering funds in the London alternate market for its projects 8It has forayed into solar power too albeit through the competitive bidding route that will keep margins under leash. 8But the going ahead is not going to be all that easy given the volatility of the thermal power market through the company continues to enjoy good ratings from agencies. For reference purposes, the website carries here the impact of availability of generation compensation on the debt metrics of a wind power project having a long-term PPA at Rs. 3.50 per unit 8The capital cost is assumed at Rs. 7.00 crore per MW. 8For instance, in case of grid back down for 10% of the time and without any compensation, the cumulative DSCR for the project would decline from 1.25 times to 1.10 times. However, the availability of compensation at 50% of the PPA tariff, would lead to a cumulative DSCR of 1.17 times, thereby lowering the impact of grid back down on the debt coverage metrics of the project.
